Unfortunately, sex crimes against children are a common thing, but when news of this sort makes the headlines, it usually involves some creepy school teacher or Catholic priest. That’s why we were shocked to learn that Ian Watkins, the lead singer of the British rock band Lostprophets, had been charged with sexual crimes against children. He’s being accused of conspiring to rape a one-year old girl and other heinous crimes.

According to Billboard, Watkins faces charges of conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a female under 13 and possession/distribution of indecent images of children. Aside from the rape charges, the frontman was accused of two incidents of conspiring to engage in sexual activity with two young children, and possessing, making and distributing indecent images of children, and also animal pornography. And he’s not alone. Two women, aged 20 and 24, have also been charged along with Watkins. All are due in court on Wednesday in the Welsh capital, Cardiff. A lawyer for Watkins said that his client will deny the charges. But the police continue to build their case against him.

In November, the band canceled their tour of Russia and Japan due to a critical illness in the band’s family. Lostprophets formed in 1997. Their 2004 record Say Something was a hit in the U.S. And they also scored a No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in 2004 with “Last Train Home.” They’ve opened for bands like Linkin Park and Deftones, and are very popular on the other side of the pond.
