Actress Zoe Saldana, best known to audiences for her roles in Star Trek and Avatar, will next be introduced to the masses as none other than Nina Simone—as Saldana is set to star as the staggeringly gifted singer in an upcoming biopic.
The film will be simply titled—Nina—and is set to begin production on October 16th in Los Angeles. Zoe Saldana stepped in to play Simone after numerous production delays (which included Mary J. Blige dropping out of the role due to budget problems). She’ll be joined by David Oyelowo (The Help) as Clifton Henderson. Henderson was Nina Simon’s manager. Nina was written by Cynthia Mort, who will also direct.
The biopic is a long time coming, and it is assumed it will cover the singer’s entire life. As Rolling Stone notes, Simone began singing in church as a young girl, learned to play the organ at age seven, and released several classic albums and songs, nimbly skipping though such genres as jazz, folk, soul, R&B, and gospel. Simone was also a prominent figure in the 1960s Civil Rights movement. She died in 2003 after suffering from breast cancer for several years.
